CV layout and format

Your CV layout and CV format can be almost as important as the content because if your CV format is not easy to read there is a chance that it won’t be.

Good CV A good CV layout is usually 1-2 pages long and very easy reading. Some tips to a good CV format are: - simple font (size 11-12); - clear headings; - good use of white space (you may consider using bullet points); - no large blocks of text; - consistent layout e.g. if one heading is underlined or in a different font all other headings should follow suit; - utilize bold font to draw the reader’s focus to the important areas of the CV. Whilst good CVs are individual, it is also important not to go overboard with creativity; a good CV format is always clean and professional.

CV objective

Many people choose to include within their CV format a section in which they explain to the employer what their CV objective is. This section should follow directly after your personal details as your CV objective is to set the tone for the remainder of the CV. It is always a good idea to think about your CV objective prior to writing your CV (even if you choose not to include this section in your CV). Writing a CV objective is not easy; it is a very complicated balancing act. You must decide whether a short-term or a long-term CV objective is appropriate. You want to show the employer that you have drive however you do not want to come across as though you think you are ready for a promotion before you even get the job. You want to make the employer feel secure that you intend to stay in the job you are applying for a decent length of time. Try to avoid the use of words like, “I want” in your CV objective and never focus your CV objective on the remuneration you wish to receive.
